Dominica's sheer walls disappear under the sea, creating deep sheltered bays along its western coastline: a haven for the Sperm Whale which loves to calve and breed in this type of habitat.
Dominica is one of the last place in the world where the Sperm Whales reside all year-long. Between November and March, females come to give birth.
From November to March, the sky is clear, the sea and the wind are calm. So, it is one of the best period to watch Sperm Whales, Dolphins or one or the 22 cetaceans species seen in Dominica waters (six different species are seen on a regular basis).
The
sharp rise and fall of Dominica's landscape is as
spectacular underwater as it is on land : canyons,
dramatic walls, cliffs plunging into the depths, massive
underwater boulder fields and craters accompany steep walls
and pinnacles … Some of the most breathtaking
diving !
With a 20-meters visibility, and a 27°C temperature, just
let you invaded by underwater sensations : the reef
explodes with colourful sponges and crinoids, schools of
wrasse and chromis, large yellowtail snappers, cero,
barracuda, horse eye jacks, flying gurnards, scorpions
fish, red banded lobsters, banded coral shrimps, batfish,
turtles... Amazing biodiversity!
